Turn Your Book into a Movie Poster

I thought we'd have some fun today. Pumping up your online book promotion can be hard work, but sometimes there are little gizmos and gadgets you can play with that will make your book stand out. Book promotion can't be all work and no play, can it?

Of course not.

The picture on the right is from a team of writers that have written a pretty darn good paranormal romance that is coming out in trade paperback in February by Mardi Gras Publishing called "The Search for the Million $$$ Ghost" which is authored by Heide Kaminski, Pam Lawniczak and myself.

Actually, that's not the book cover, but a poster I made for it. You can make your own movie posters for your books by visiting http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/poster.php.

Play around with it and have fun. Pumping up your online book promotion includes getting the word out about your book, so with that in mind, make your own poster and add it to your blog and website and tell all your friends to go see!

Do you see any disadvantage to using an image that is not the cover of the book? When a potential reader goes to the book store, will he or she be confused, looking for this image instead of your book's cover image?

Also, where did you get this picture that you've selected for your poster? I'm curious about this because I'd like to do something with an image of my mc for Choices Meant for Gods (my publisher hasn't given me my cover design yet) and I'd like to know if my best bet is to stage a photo and then play with it in PhotoShop (my mc's eyes are violet) or buy something off Getty Images or what...

Thanks for your thoughts!
(Oh, and it is a nice, clean, pleasing poster, by the way. It gives a comfortable feeling to the ghost...)

Thanks for your comment, Sandy! I thought about putting the book cover up, but you have to look at it as it is...it's a movie poster, not a book poster...so instead I chose one of the frames from the book trailer I made for it that's up at YouTube to make it look like it's a movie. You can choose to put your book cover on there...entirely up to you. As for the images, I have an article up at The Writer's Life (look under the article about making your own book trailers) that has links to where you can pick up some copyright-free images.
